Basketball Injuries


Several athletic injuries from the sport of Basketball are quite common. The most prominent being ankle and leg injuries due to the use of the legs, feet, and entire lower body area in the sport. Also, both acute or traumatic injuries and overuse injuries are common when playing basketball. Since it’s is not as much of a contact sport like football or hockey, most of the acute injuries in basketball have to do with ligament tears and strains when tripping, falling, or landing awkwardly on the feet and ankles. Overuse injuries are also just as common in basketball as acute injuries such as ligament tears and other strains, and may include injuries such ailments as shin splints, tendonitis in the Achilles, and knee problems.

Foot and Ankle Injuries In Basketball
     Several forms of ankle injuries arise from physical stress in active basketball players. The most popular being ankle sprains from twisted or rolled ankles due to the nature of the sport. This typically occurs with an awkward landing or a fall.  Types of ankle sprains include 3 different grades or levels of severity for both inward and outward ankle sprains. A grade 1 or mild sprain may result in some swelling and tenderness and require only a short time of rest and recovery, while a grade 3 or severe sprain may require surgical reconstruction and weeks of recovery.
     Other foot and ankle injuries include overuse injuries such as Achilles tendonitis which occurs from jumping and landing frequently which is common in basketball. The Achilles tendon is one of the largest tendons in the human body, and connects the heel to the lower calf muscles in the leg. There are two forms of tendinitis in this muscle, called “Noninsertional Achilles Tendinitis” and “Insertional Achilles Tendinitis. Leg Injuries In Basketball
     Leg injuries from basketball are likely because of the heightened level of stress on the lower body. Some different forms of acute and overuse injuries which are widespread in basketball players are pulled or strained hamstrings and shin splints. The hamstring in the leg consists of a muscle group of three different muscles; called the Semitendinosus, Semimembranosus and Biceps Femoris. Hamstring injuries typically deal with a tear in one of these three muscles. Similar to other strains, a pulled hamstring may have one of three different levels of severity, either a grade of 1, 2, or 3. Grade 1 hamstring strains may result in minor discomfort while keeping the ability to walk and function normally, and grade 3 or severe strains may take an athlete out of the game, keeping them on crutches or other walking aids. Shin splints also known as “Tibial Stress Syndrome” is another common basketball injury and is related to overuse. They might arise from an athlete suddenly boosting their level of activity or other similar strains on the shin and result in swollen muscles and pains. Some basketball players are prone to shin splints over time simply because of the ongoing heightened activity levels in the sport.

Recovery and Prevention     
     Because basketball is one of the most widely played sports in the athletic world, injuries are quite common. Whether you are a professional athlete playing for a billion dollar franchise and the playoffs, or simply out in the driveway or at your local fitness club playing for fun with friends, injuries are a potential for everyone.  Even though there are many injuries which are common and potential with playing basketball, there are also many forms of recovery, and pain relief. Pain relief can come in the form of R.I.C.E. (Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation) and sometimes surgery. If basketball injuries are more severe, they may be corrected with a surgical procedure, however many simply need the use of ice wraps, and rest.
     Many ice wraps are available for basketball injuries and help in the R.I.C.E. process due to the fact that they offer support and compression helping the compression and ice treatment of the injury. With acute injuries like ankle sprains from twisted or rolled ankles, it may only take a few short weeks to fully recover from an injury from playing basketball with the use of ice wraps or cold packs. Other injuries which are chronic in nature may be a bit more difficult to tame, but can also still be relieved with the use of rest, ice wraps, and other products to help with support.      While an athlete or coach may not like the idea of rest, typically it’s the best recovery regime for overuse. Understandably, professional athletes like basketball players may not have the ability to rest with their busy schedules; this is why medical products are made to help reduce the onset of certain overuse injuries. The best way to prevent injuries in basketball is stretching and warming up muscles and ligaments that are put to good use when playing the sport. Sets of hamstring stretches and other foot and ankle stretches can help reduce the chances of an athletic injury due to a hyperextension or overextension with a fall or awkward landing. Stretching greatly reduces the chances of developing those overuse injuries.
